WorldCom, global leaders in the digital communications industry, needed to re-develop their on-line health and safety training course for induction and annual refresher training. The challenge was to develop something that really impressed the users - something that was better than everything else they had seen and would support their reputation and strong track record in health and safety management.

Specific requirements included:

• A creative and stimulating programme that was visually rich, fully interactive and would engage the user throughout the learning process
• Relevant to all roles in the organisation, including a specific module on manager's responsibilities in the workplace
• The facility for an on-line risk assessment facility for staff to complete and automatically issue to their line manager
• Development within the WorldCom web-based training framework and delivered through their World of Learning portal.

Bourne designed a modular package covering key health and safety issues including DSE, fire and emergency, manual handling and health and safety for managers. Key features included:

• Media-rich and visually stimulating content, incorporating 3-D animation, animated graphics and audio
• A unique tutorial approach which presented the subject from the users' perspective and, in particular, the effect that their actions could have on their bodies and relating this to their private as well as professional activities
• Extensive use of interactivity, learning checks and randomly selected end of module challenges to test learner understanding
• Links to the World of Learning management system to monitor user logon, bookmark progress, and retain assessment tracking and risk assessment data.
