The Challenge
“We have a responsibility to ensure all staff and contractors are fully aware of basic health and safety requirements on all of our nuclear sites. The CBT programme has played a major role in supporting this.”
British Nuclear Fuels Limited, a leading specialist in nuclear technology, needed to provide health and safety training to 3,000 permanent and contract staff working at BNFL Magnox Generation sites. They were required to cover all legislative aspects and ensure that the training was flexible for the different needs of the audience.
Specific requirements included:
- Networked computer-based training which could be used on a stand-alone basis or within tutor-led group training sessions across all 8 nuclear sites
- A pocket workbook interacting with the CBT at key stages to reinforce learning points and provide a mechanism for refresher training
- A creative approach to health and safety training, incorporating key accelerated learning principles and ensuring the user is involved throughout the course
- Training that meets legislative requirements and leaves trainees with a positive view of BNFL Magnox Generation and the importance placed on health and safety awareness.
Bourne's Solution
Bourne designed and developed a modular CBT programme to introduce health and safety training. Based around a fictional tour of a BNFL site, it uses two primary characters to guide trainees through the course. Key features include:
- Structured, linear approach with in line learning checks and summaries to ensure the user is fully involved in the learning process
- Incorporation of graphics, animation, photographic images and audio to ensure a highly stimulating learning environment without extensive use of text
- Incorporation of real-life images of BNFL sites and realistic workplace scenarios
- An integrated training workbook to provide on-site reference support following completion of the training
- High quality cartoon graphics to guide the user through the course and introduce humour within the learning process.
Business Benefits
“The training has proved very successful in helping us to maintain our high standards in this area - our investment has helped to send the message that we take health and safety training very seriously.”
- Increased awareness of health and safety requirements by all staff entering BNFL nuclear sites
- Effective, measurable training and job support - playing a full role in reducing health and safety incidents
- Time and cost-effective mechanism to train high numbers of contractors entering nuclear sites
- Visible reinforcement of the priority placed on health and safety issues by BNFL.
