The Challenge
“ We needed to find a more efficient way to train on a global scale. The new system had one worldwide launch date and face-to-face delivery was simply not an option. This was our first experience of custom-built e-Learning so we needed to ensure that it was going to achieve the right results - the training had to be right but we also had to consider cultural and global roll-out issues.”
PricewaterhouseCoopers undertook a major update of their PeopleSoft global HR management system, moving from a Windows-based to a web-deployed version. They needed a solution to train all new users and to enable the effective transition of 750 existing global HR staff to the new delivery platform.
Specific requirements included:
- Intranet-delivered training that simulated the exact functionality of the HR system and enabled hands-on practice during the training process
- A training programme that could be delivered effectively to a global audience and that was modular in structure to enable staff to manage their time and plan their training around their work schedules
- A facility to introduce web functionality to staff who had not previously used the Internet
- A facility to prove competence during the training process and enable authority to use the live system to be triggered following training.
Bourne's Solution
Bourne designed and developed a modular system simulation programme delivered through the PwC Intranet. The training replicated the look and functionality of the new web-delivered HR application and incorporated extensive user interaction. A pilot group of super-users underwent early training to validate the content and support the global launch.
Key features include:
- A modular structure providing users with the flexibility to study relevant areas at their own pace. The course concentrated on the differences between the old and new systems, and identified the navigational and functional differences offered by the web-delivered application
- Bourne’s unique interactive tutorial approach to enable the user to interact with the system throughout the learning process
- An optional Web Functionality module to introduce the basic concepts of the Internet for staff who have not previously had experience of the Web. This was combined with a help facility for task and assessment elements, providing learner support and guidance within the programme
- Assessments based on realistic PwC scenarios to prove competence and help build confidence in the new system prior to implementation. Scores were e-mailed to a central point and authority to access the operational system was given only when the pass mark was achieved in the assessment scenarios.
Business Benefits
“Bourne understood the pressures we were under and grasped the subject matter in no time at all. In just 6 weeks they produced a first-class product which exceeded our expectations. Our first bespoke e-Learning was very successful and has provided valuable learning points that we can use for future implementations. Feedback from the staff using the training has been very positive.”
- Standardised, global training solution for all system users - reducing the cost of delivery and ensuring a consistent global message
- Competent and confident staff following training - interactive features within the training programme ensured that trainees could demonstrate effective use of the system before being authorised to use the live system
- Cost and time-effective delivery medium - no requirement for face-to-face delivery which released members of the UK-based training team to deal with other challenges
- A flexible and modular training resource that can be used for future refresher or induction training.
